The thing with losing someone you really care about is that memories of all the times you have shared with that person keep swimming around your head. You relish in the thoughts and may even indulge in shedding those tears that make you feel a little better afterwards. You tend to go over the conversations you have had, the touching moments, the reasons why you’ve loved and cared about that person so much and sometimes, the little nagging feeling that you could have done something more. The truth is what will be, will be. But you just wish you had done a little bit more, nonetheless.

This week marks the tenth anniversary of the death of my grandfather, Alhaji Ibrahim Biu, the first Minister of Information of the Northern Region.  He was a man whom, unlike our leaders of today, completely detached himself from worldly things. I still remember vividly that fateful day that he passed on to his creator. Lying frail on his sickbed on the night of Thursday January 3, 2002, he managed to speak his last words to us: asking if we had done the Isha’i prayers. After getting assurances that we have all done the last compulsory prayer of the day, he went on to apologize to us for his current sick state.

On that fateful day, late DIG Ganiyu Ali Dawodu was hale and hearty as he prepared to depart Abuja for Lagos to represent the immediate-past Inspector-General of Police Hafiz Abubakar Ringim at a function. Prior to his departure, I was with him at his 7th floor office at the Louis Edet House, Abuja, with some people who came to pay him a visit. A few minutes after our arrival, he whisked us to the IGP’s Office and introduced the team to him, stressing that the visitors are his blood, which means they need no prior appointment to see him. The Inspector-General cracked jokes with us all.

It started early this year, just like a normal eye problem associated with old age. Baffa was diagonised with cataract at the ECWA Hospital, Kano. He was booked for eye surgery and it went on smoothly. However, two days after the surgery, the neat, clean and “dan gayu” that Baffa was, tried to shave his face, as he does daily. In the process of stretching the face muscles, the still-fresh stitches in the eye got loose. Baffa was again forced to go into another round of surgery to fix the problem. After it was conducted, however, Baffa fell ill. Dr. Mannir, his eldest child, arranged for series of medical examinations to be conducted on him, after many visits to several consultants. At last, Baffa was diagnosed of renal failure (a kidney-associated problem).
