In 1992 during the June 12 political crises and debates in the country, I wrote a letter to the editor, which was published in one of the dailies. It was my first published write-up and its publication encouraged me to write more and utilise my little writing skills. But as a role model in the family, late Salihijo Ahmad played a major role in my decision to write more often. He was the first to speak to me about my published letter, and spent time encouraging me to always put down whatever I feel strongly about, not necessarily for newspaper publication alone. He told me that many successful writers the world over have positively or negatively influenced decisions in their places and that if I can sustain ‘this gift’, I can make a lot positive contribution to the  betterment of my society and country at large. That little sermon remains etched on my mind till date.

I was greatly astounded, when on Friday 1 June, 2012, I receive the news of the sudden death of a friend, and a mentor who inspired me to aim at greater heights in my chosen path of being a commentator on issues. That person was the paramount ruler of Bachama His Royal Highness Chief Asaph Zadok who passed away in Cairo.

As a past student of hers and a product of tender care for all irrespective, my saddest day in school was when she assembled us all in the Refectory one day to announce to us that: “just as when a horse gets old and is no longer as active as in its younger days, it needs rest.” And with that terse declaration a year before my graduation from the school she had refined as founder and pioneer Principal of Concordia College, Yola in Adamawa state, she moved on to retirement. That was the only day I wept in school.
