The tribute on General Mamman Kontagora written by my elder brother, the valorous columnist who writes on Wednesdays for Daily Trust and The Nation newspapers said it all when in his column of last week Wednesday June5, 2013, Mohammed Haruna described the deceased as a symbol of hard work, integrity and honesty. It is in God’s perfect wisdom that He (SWT) created the heavens, the earth and indeed all creatures. Out of His perfect wish, God created angels from light; the Jinn from fire and man from clay; making angels and Jinn invincible to man in this life. To further perfect the creation of the universe, God created other living beings as well as non-living things. The number of God’s creatures is known to Him (SWT) alone.

If there is anything lacking among many Nigerians today, it is the single act of decency called courtesy. It is missing from virtually all aspects of our private and public life. Rarely do you find courtesy, which in many instances is a mark of respect, among siblings in our homes, among colleagues in nearly all professions except the military where decorum is still at work. Values have so much eroded that being un-courteous is becoming a norm in our country. Perhaps, those whose dictionary does not have the word “courtesy” are nurses and midwives that work in hospital labour rooms. Rather than consoling a woman in severe labour pains during child-birth, nurses are good at dressing-down such women. Commercial bus drivers are people with the least sense of courtesy. Motor Park is probably the last place you could find courtesy. A Nigerian politician, too, remembers to be courteous only when he comes to ask you for votes.

Government which predictably should be a source of consoling events through life-touching initiatives has rather become a pitiable source of worry and a huge burden to citizens. Corruption, nepotism and the culture of impunity have remained the basic tools of governance under President Jonathan.

It was President Jonathan’s Special Adviser on Niger Delta who first issued threats of violence while on a visit to the United States of America should their kinsman, Jonathan, loses re-election in 2015; meaning that President Jonathan’s tenure must extend beyond 2015 by all means and at all cost.
