Eagles defenders lack understanding says Sofoluwe

Former Super Eagles defender Yisa Sofoluwe has blamed Eagles defenders’ unimpressive showing in some matches on what he described as lack of understanding which he said is a direct consequence of frequent changes.
Speaking to Trustsports, the ex-international said the defenders are not really bad but there is hardly any understanding among them because they hardly play together for a long time.
Sofoluwe said in their days, the defenders played together for many years and in the process develop perfect understanding which enables them to easily ward off attackers.
He said it was easy for every member of the defence to know when to move out and when to stay and fight to dispossess attackers because the understanding was always there.
“In our days we have wonderful understanding because we played together for a very long time. In the process, we understood one another and could move out at the same time, if we want to move out and remain whenever we were not going out.
“This time, the story is not the same because the defenders lack understanding. The problem is that the handlers of the team keep changing defenders. In one match, you see a set of defenders and in the next, you see other defenders. This will not create room for understanding among the present crop of defenders”.
He therefore advised that if the Super Eagles defenders are to perform better, they must be allowed to play together for a long time even if they are making mistakes.
Sofoluwe who earned the nick name “minister of defence” due to his brilliance in the right full back position of the Super Eagles defence in his playing days reiterated that it is only when the 0players are allowed to play together that they would build the needed confidence and understanding.
“My advice is that instead of constantly changing players in the defence, those who have been found useful should be retained and used consistently. Even if a player fails in his responsibility in a match, he should not be dropped. This is the only way to raise defenders who would understand one another and play as a team” he stated.
Sofoluwe who made a name playing in the national team in the days of Dutchman Clemence Westerhof said nobody should make the mistake of thinking that there are no more good defenders in the Super Eagles.
He called on handlers of the team to always visit the league centres to look for young players who can be groomed to play in the defence of the senior national team.
“I call on Super Eagles coaches to form the good habit of visiting the league venues for budding talents. If they don’t do so, we would not be able to discover talented defenders”
