Chief of Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets, John Obuh has described his colleagues and players of the national team as local champions who are eagerly looking for fame using the on going FIFA U-17 World Cup as a platform.
Speaking on Thursday in Abuja shortly after seeing his team maul New Zealand 5-0 to book one of the quarter final tickets, the coach said his and his players are champions on the domestic scene and are fervently praying for a successful championship so that they too would be recognized internationally.
He said so far the players have proved in very clear terms that they are ready to lay down their lives to retain the Cup so that their names will be written in gold.
“I am a local champion and my players are also local champions. We are from the best in the local scene and we want to win so that we too would be recognized. If we win this championship, we would become famous in a way.
“It is for this reason that we are all doing our best to win our matches. It is not going to be easy but if we remain focused, we would be able to achieve our target” he stated.
Obuh said although his boys engaged in entertaining football, they were able to score five goals just as he said that the boys played to the gallery but in a positive manner.
“I can’t stop the players from playing to the gallery. By the way, they did it in a positive manner. It is not all the time that players play according to the instruction of their coach”
He maintained that when the competition started, he expected to see his side scoring so many goals but it was not possible but now that the goals have started pouring in, he has every reason to thank God.
“In three matches, we managed to score six goals which was below my expectations but today, we have scored five goals. I have to thank God that the goals finally came”.
The coach said his team will do its best against South Korea when they clash in one of the quarter final matches.
Obuh confessed that the Koreans would not be a push over but his players are poised to clinch victory in that crucial match.
