South Africa 2010: Lumumba hails Task Force on Eagles

As reactions continue to trail Super Eagles qualification for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, former NFA presidential aspirant Hon. Lumumba Dah Adeh has hailed the Presidential Task Force on Eagles for living up to its assignment.
It will be recalled that when the chances of the country to qualify for the 2010 World Cup became hazy, President Umaru Musa Yar’adua intervened by setting up the Task Force headed by Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi to directly supervise the team’s remaining matches of the qualifiers.
The Eagles picked the ticket to South Africa on the last day of the qualifiers after beating the Harambee Stars of Kenya in Nairobi but it was Mozambique’s victory over group rivals Tunisia that sealed the qualification for the country.
Speaking on Eagles ticket to South Africa, Lumumba expressed gratitude to Yar’adua who saw the need to intervene in the team’s campaign by setting up the Task Force which played significant role in the remaining matches of the team’s qualifiers.
He said it was a timely intervention which has yielded the necessary dividends.
Lumumba in addition said when praising the Task Force for a job well done, the body in charge of football in the country, NFF, must be acknowledged.
He said the football federation too played its part and should be commended, adding that all football enthusiasts who kept the football house on its feet should also be taken into consideration.
“I want to give credit to the Presidential Task Force on Eagles for the World Cup ticket. It was a timely intervention that paid off. But in commending the Task Force, we must not forget to acknowledge the part which NFF played. I give credit to even those patriots who kept the football house and the Task Force on their toes”.
Lumumba said now that the team has landed in South Africa, preparations for both the Nations Cup and World Cup in South Africa should commence immediately.
He said even as the continent has formidable representatives in countries like Ghana, Cote’dvoire and Cameroun, the whole world would look up to Nigeria to lead Africa’s chase for the coveted trophy.
“Considering the attention that will be on Nigeria, preparation should start immediately. Even as Africa will be represented by formidable representatives like Cameroon, Ghana and Coted;voire, much would be expected from Nigeria and the Eagles can not afford to let down the continent” he said.
Lumumba said Nigeria may not lift the World Cup but the Super Eagles should do everything possible to improve on their last appearance in the World Cup.
“A lot of work needs to be done to ensure that the Eagles do better than what they did in their last appearance which was at Japan/Korea 2002. Between now and the World Cup, the team should be adequately prepared by those assigned the responsibility” he maintained.
