A cross section of football stakeholders have been commenting on the list of the Super Eagles to the 2010 African Cup of Nations in Angola, which was released by Coach Shaibu Amodu last Wednesday, with former Head of Professional League in the NFA Charles Ojugbana and former Gombe FA Chairman Alhaji Ahmed Shaibu Gara Gombe saying the Eagles will achieve nothing at the biennial soccer championship..
The duo, who stated this in a telephone interview with Trustsports, said their views were based on poor planning and the quality of players that made the team to Angola.
On the other hand, former member of the House of Representatives member and JC Raiders Football Club of Jos Proprietor, Lumumba Adeh says Coach Amodu was right in his choice of players he is takin to Angola.
According to Adeh, who equally spoke in a telephone interview with Trustsports, Nigerians should appreciate the fact that the country at the moment has no alternative to the players picked for Angola by Coach Amodu.
However, he equally said Nigeria’s chances of making appreciable impact at the African soccer show is bleak with the team Amodu is taking to the tournament.
“Based on the current form of the players that make up the team, I can say Nigeria’s chances of winning the tournament are bleak, even as I would have loved them to win; but again, there are no alternatives to these players for now, because they are the ones that have been around and playing together.
“Again, the time is short, and in the circumstance, I would say Coach Amodu was right in his decision on the team to Angola”, Adeh stated.
On his part, Ojugbana who questioned the criteria used to pick the 24 players says no serious Nigerian can expect anything positive from the Nigerian team to Angola because of poor preparation, planning and lack of world class players from the Nigerian team.
“What is the parameter used in picking the 24 players, I am disturbed at the way our team is being handled now. The planning is defective and the list is unreliable.
“So, what I want to say is that there is no serious expectation from the Eagles in Angola, no serious Nigerian can expect anything from this team”, Ojugbana stated.
Similarly, former Gombe FA Chairman Alhaji Shaibu Ahmed Gara Gombe says the team presented by Amodu cannot withstand oppositions from cup holders Egypt and Mozambique that gave Nigeria tough challenge in the World Cup qualifier.
“We don’t have a serious team than can face tough challenges from the rest of Africa, most of our players are bench warmers in their various clubs; and again there is no serious preparation unlike other countries that have been planning for the tournament for long”, Gombe stated.
