Even as there appears to be a glimmer of hope for the Super Eagles as they prepare to take on the Chipolopolo of Zambia in one of the quarter final matches at the on going Africa Cup of nations in Angola, former board member of the then Nigeria Football Association, NFA and now Commissioner of Justice in Benue State, Barrister Chive Kaave has said going by the current performance of the team, it is hard to predict what would be the outcome of the match.
Speaking to Trustsports yesterday, the former Chairman of the once dreaded BCC Lions FC Gboko said if it were the Eagles of the good old days of Rashidi Yekini, Daniel Amokachi, Emmanuel Amunike, Finidi George and Sunday Oliseh, it would have been easy to make a prediction but since the story is no longer the same, he would not like to stick out his neck.
Kaave said those who still predict Eagles matches are people who are ready to face any degree of humiliation as he maintained that it is like one going out in search of serious embarrassment.
“The present Super Eagles are highly unpredictable. They blow hot and cold so it is dangerous to make any prediction. If it were the Eagles of old, one would confidently say what will happen when they take on the Zambians but this new generation Eagles are hard to predict. If one makes a prediction today and in the end they fail to perform, it would become a serious embarrassment.
“Whoever predicts today’s Eagles matches is courting serious embarrassment. If they win today, that should not be enough for anyone to predict that they will still win tomorrow. Since I don’t believe in inflicting unnecessary embarrassment on myself, I no longer predict Eagles matches”.
The former NFF board member in addition expressed happiness with former Eagles player, Coach Moses Kpakor’s views on Eagles defensive play as he said if the coaching crew of the team would listen to the former BCC Lions star’s advice, it would do the team a lot of good.
He completely agreed with his former player who said one of the banes of the team is that it is fond of playing too many back passes even when there is no need to play backward.
“It is annoying the way the team plays its back passes. Instead of making adventurous passes, Eagles players have formed the bad habit of playing backward at the slightest hurdle. In football, it is said the men should be behind the ball but in the case of the Eagles, it is always the ball behind the men. This is unacceptable and I feel strongly that Amodu and his assistants should listen to what Moses Kpakor said about the team’s style of play”.
Kaave maintained that although Nigerians are praying for the team, the players must be ready to work harder because faith without action can never work miracles.
“The team is calling for prayers from Nigerians. Yes, we are praying for them but they too must step up their game. If we pray and they continue with their lackadaisical attitude, it will make no difference. Success is a combination of hard work and prayer. I just hope the team will realize this in good time”.
“Let me reiterate here that the present Eagles must improve the standard of their game. They are no longer the Eagles we used to know. Watching the team play now is tantamount to going in search of high blood pressure”.
