2nd Imansuagbon football competition ends in Abuja

The second edition of Barrister Kenneth Imansuagbon football competition for secondary schools in the Federal Capital Territory ended on Thursday at the Old Parade sports complex Abuja amid pomp with Government Secondary School Wuse Zone 3 and Government Secondary School Gwagwa emerging victorious in the male and female categories.
The grand finale which was attended by a capacity crowd saw Government Secondary School Gwagwa girls beating their opponents from Government Secondary School Gwarinpa by a goal to nil to clinch the gold medal and a cash prize of N250, 000.
In the boy’s finals which was played shortly after the opening match between GSS Gwagwa and GSS Gwarinpa, Government Secondary School Wuse Zone 3 came from behind to beat Abuja Standard College Dutse Alhaji 2-1 to go home with the cash prize of N250, 000.
The three goals in the intriguing encounter were scored in the first half of the match which saw GSS Wuse Zone 3 star player Safyanu Jibirn scoring the vital equalizer for his side after a goal mouth scramble.
At the end of the matches, certificates and other cash prizes were given to the participating schools. The runners up and third placed teams smiled home with N150,000 and N100,000 respectively.
In his address at the occasion, the sponsor of the competition and proprietor of Pacesetters Academy, Kenneth Imansuagbon expressed satisfaction with the soccer artistry that was displayed by the schools which played in the finals.
He commended the winners and urged those who failed to reach the finals to re-double their efforts so that in the next edition of the competition, they will also play in the finals.
While congratulating the victories schools, he urged them not to rest on their oars but work harder to prove that their performance is not a flash in the pan.
“ From what I have seen this evening, the future of Nigeria’s football is really bright. These are the stars of tomorrow and I am happy that talent scouts have been around since the beginning of the competition to identify some of these budding talents”.
The Football enthusiast in addition called on other philanthropists to emulate his kind gesture by organizing similar competitions for the youths as he noted that when given such opportunities, the minds of the youths would be taken away from some of the social vices like thuggery.
I want to urge other Nigerians to see the need to sponsor grassroots competitions. This will go a long way in assisting to promote sporting activities among the youths of this country. And as it is said, an idle mind is the devil’s workshop. We must keep the youths of this country busy with profitable ventures at all times”
Imansuangbon pledged to continue to sponsor the football competition which debuted last year but did not include the female category.
“I want to put it on record that this competition will be an annual event and I am taking it very seriously. At the inaugural edition, we did not include female football but this year, it has been included and you can see the glamour that has been brought into this competition”.
Among the dignitaries who graced the finals was Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Premier League, Alhaji Alhassan Yakmut, representative of the NFF president, Mr. Sunday Okhai as well as principals of secondary schools in the FCT.
