Wolfsburg striker Obafemi Martins has said that like Argentina, Nigeria also have their own stars who will shine when both teams clash on Saturday at the Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg.
“It is an important match for all of us. People talk a lot about (Lionel) Messi, forgetting that there are other very good players in the Argentina team, such as (Carlos) Tevez and (Diego) Milito.
“It’s a team game and we also have our own stars for the day,” declared the 25-year-old Martins after the team’s training session near the Protea Hotel Waterfront in Richard’s Bay.
Olympique Marseille defender Taye Taiwo, who will come face-to-face with club mate Gabriel Heinze on Saturday, re-echoed Martins’ battle cry.
“We know Messi is a good player and we can’t allow him to roam round the park just like that.
“But we also have our great players. They’ve got a couple of great players,” said Taiwo, who revealed he is gunning for revenge after the country lost to Argentina in the final of the 2005 FIFA Under-20 World Cup with Messi his team’s main inspiration.
Meanwhile, Coach Lars Lagerback will have a full team available for selection for Saturday’s showdown as there are no injuries in the squad.
Team doctor Paul Onyeudo and physiotherapist Dayo Ogunkunle confirmed there are no injuries.
The weather was friendly as Lagerback led his charges through their paces in Richard’s Bay on Thursday afternoon.
