However, the Congress, in an effort to give all interested stakeholders the opportunity to participate in the polls, approved a two weeks extension for the collection and return of completed election forms .
According to the communiqué, signed by Mr. Amaju Melvin Pinnick, the Congress also unanimously ratified the dismissals and the interim leadership of the NFF as recently constituted.
“The Congress reiterated its commitment to the principles of transparency, honesty and due process, and in this wise, fully endorsed the recent changes in the leadership by the Executive Committee of the Federation. In other words, the dismissals and the interim leadership of the NFF have been ratified by Congress through a unanimous vote of 84 for and 0 (NIL) against”, the communiqué stated.
While approving that members of the Executive Committee of the NFF be elected by their respective zonal delegates on the floor of General Assembly, the Congress also announced its commitment to work harmoniously with the Federal Government and all agencies that have direct relevance to the management and promotion of football in Nigeria.
In his reaction, former NFA chairmanship aspirant, Lumumba Dah Adeh congratulated the congress on the decisions, saying the congressmen acted in the best interest of Nigerian football.
He explained that anything short of what the congress did yesterday in Abuja would have amounted to another avoidable disaster.
He said: “I want to congratulate the congress for showing such courage. I know they were under pressure but they acted in the best interest of Nigerian football. They will forever be remembered for contributing a great deal in saving Nigerian football”.
Lumumba therefore said going by recent events, there is beginning to be light at the end of the dark tunnel but added that those running the show presently must not fail to make the best use of the opportunity given them to re-position Nigerian football.
He said the congress did not extend the 2010 NFF election date because they were guided by FIFA statues which has no provision for interim leadership of football federations.
“I just hope that what we have witnessed so far will translate into appreciable regeneration in our football. The congress has worked in the larger interest of the nation. I salute the congress” he stated.
Also in his reaction, former NFA Secretary General Alhaji Sani Ahmed Toro commended the Congress for taking the decision.
He stated that it was a wise decision because it would have been difficult for the country to convince FIFA to extend the tenure of those on the board or appoint a sole administrator which FIFA frowns at.
Toro therefore prayed for the Federation to be able to elect those that will work for the development of football in the country in the coming election.
“Yes, I am happy they took that decision because there is no way there will be a vacuum at the end of the tenure of those on the board because FIFA does not allow for interim leadership.
“So, it would have been difficult for them to convince FIFA to extend the tenure of the board, and I am sure they are aware of it that is why they respected FIFA and NFF statutes to insist that election should go ahead on August 21”, Toro stated.
