Offa lands Golf Academy as WAAGA tourney tees off

A golf academy for the training of young and talented golfers will soon take off in Offa-Igosun, Kwara State.
This was made known by the Chairman of West Africa Amateur Golf Association (WAAGA) and former Chief of the Naval Staff Vice-Admiral GTA Adekeye (rtd) on the eve of a 12–nation golf tourney beginning today at the Royal Valley Golf Resort, Igosun-Offa.
Trustsports learnt that when fully established, the academy will be fully staffed and equipped to serve the interest of youth golfers from all over the nation.
The tournament will feature teams from Nigeria, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Cameroon and Sierra-Leone.
Other participating countries are Niger, Burkina-Faso, Ivory Coast, Benin Republic, Togo and Senegal. Adekeye who is also President of Royal Valley Golf Resort Igosun – Offa disclosed further that the 18-hole, all-green golf resort will be a fully packaged holiday resort.
“Our ultimate aim is to make Royal valley a full resort. Right now there is a hotel complex close by. Then we are going to create a royal resort village where people can have some local entertainment. Also in the pipeline is an artificial lake where people can do small fishing and boating”.
According to Adekeye, the Royal Valley Golf Course is one of the best three in the country. “In the test runs we’ve had at the young golf course we had a lot of good golfers who came to test the place and they attested to the good standard of the golf course. They believe it competes well with what they have seen in other parts of the country: that in fact it is one of the best three in the country in terms of size, design and facilities.
Adekeye also debunked the belief that golf is an elitist sport: “don’t let us look at golf from the elitist point of view… it is a game that is meant to be played by all age groups, from toddlers to octogenarians”, he said.
