How ready is NPL for a hitch free 2010/2011 season?
We are fully ready. Already we have conducted our seminars and workshops for players, club officials and match officials. Furthermore, we have given out the conditions which clubs must meet before they will be registered. First of all, the issue of registration fee is not negotiable. It is money all the clubs must pay to be part of the league. Clubs must also provide players contract papers. Contract papers are major tools we would rely upon when carrying out any verification. We have also made it mandatory for clubs to submit letters of commitment from their financiers. And of course, the no-go area is the issue of venues. Clubs must have TV friendly stadiums. These are the conditions which the clubs are expected to meet.
Similar efforts in the past did not yield any positive results. Are we are going to witness strict implementation of the laid down rules and regulations?
We have put these things in black and white. They are written down and we are going to ensure strict compliance. If you do this, you get it this way, if you fail to do this, this will be the result. I want the public to give us a chance. I am not boasting that there will be a drastic departure from what our predecessors did but I think this new board has an iron will to succeed. We are not politicians. We are football administrators and we shall surely make a difference.
Have the clubs shown eagerness to comply with the four new conditions?
The truth is very simple. It is not a must that we must have 20 premier league clubs. What we want to start is to have real professional clubs. We are presently struggling to put in place structures that would produce true professional clubs. Have we erred? Let the public give us a chance. Things will get better in our league.
Running the league is capital intensive. How soon is NPL going to get a title sponsor?
Well, we are following due process. There are laid down standards of doing things and we want to follow same with utmost diligence. The first four years contract with Globacom has ended sometime in July. We are taking our time. We have just placed advertorials in this respect and I can tell you that the results are encouraging. Already we have attracted two interested partners. They are willing to bid for title sponsorship. This should be welcoming news. We would do everything transparently. But before then, we would be working with some of our silent sponsors.
So you are optimistic that the 2010/2011 season will not be played without a sponsor?
I am very optimistic. By the special grace of God, we would get a credible title sponsor. We have a good brand so we should not have any problem attracting sponsors. But everything depends on God because he alone has the power of disposing the proposals of men.
Lastly, how much are you enjoying your present office?
I think no normal person enjoys a plane taking off. I hope you understand. The reason is that you have to fasten your belt, sit tight with apprehension until you get to the cruising level. For now it is turbulent but we shall get to the Promised Land. All we need to deliver on our promises is the support of all genuine stakeholders.
