‘Regular competition will enhance players’ game’

The National Junior Tennis Coach, Ubale Mohammed, says events at the ongoing 24th Dala Hard Court Tennis Tournament have justified the need for regular competitions among Nigerian players.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the annual competition for male and female players began in Kano on Monday and will close on Saturday.Already, a number of upsets have been recorded at the competition, with men’s number one seed Sunday Emmanuel crashing out in the first round.
Mohammed told NAN in a telephone interview from Kano on Friday that more competitions on the Nigerian circuit would enhance the game of players across the country.
He declared: ``It is a good thing we are having the Dala Hard Court event at the moment, and many others like it. That is the way to go if we are to improve our tennis.
``Now, with the way the seeds have been falling at Dala, it is an improvement for our game and an indication that our players are getting better.
``I hope we will have more of such competitions to ensure that players are kept busy and get to play each other and learn more,’’ he said.
NAN reports that apart from Emmanuel losing to Nonso Madueke in two sets of 7-6, 7-6, women’s top, seed Blessing Samuel, also lost to Rose Onoja 7-6, 5-7, 7-6.
Equally, Biola Akewula beat number three seed Chidinma Abah 6-3, 7-6, while Lawal Shehu beat Monday Igbinovia 6-4, 6-2.
