Adepoju bemoans Eagles failure to play quality friendly

Former Super Eagles midfielder, Mutiu Adepoju has described as unfortunate the inability of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to secure a grade A international friendly game for the Super Eagles during the FIFA window on February 9.
An online media yesterday quoted an unnamed NFF official as saying that the Super Eagles will not play against a top team during a FIFA friendly window on February 9.The report informed that the necessary contacts have not been made to that effect and most of the top countries touted to play against the Eagles have already been booked on that day and even beyond.
“It is not funny but pathetic to tell you that the Super Eagles may not play any friendly match at all unless something drastic is done before then,” an official disclosed.
“Maybe the Eagles may play against African countries like Benin, Togo and Tanzania, but if anybody is dreaming of Eagles versus Italy or France friendly, he should better forget it.
“All the top football playing countries have been fully engaged for February 9, 2011, and even the remaining FIFA windows of next year”, the report stated.
But Adepoju, while reacting to media report, however said it is better for the Super Eagles take any available country on that day than not playing any friendly match at all.
Adepoju, who refused to blame the Glass House for inactivity, noted that it could be as a result of the fact that the NFF board is just coming back from long period of crisis and needed time to settle down to work, hence the failure to secure quality game for the Eagles.
While advising the football house to work towards arranging top matches for the senior national team during FIFA windows, explained that a friendly game against Togo or any other African country will go a long way in helping the team’s preparation for the African Cup of Nations qualifying matches.
“I want to believe that lack of time on the part of the new board caused this, but it is better we play a game on the FIFA free day than not playing at all.
“Nigeria is a big football nation and deserves to play top teams in the world, but in the absence of that a match against Togo or any other African team will help in a little way, especially in the build up for the coming qualifying matches. But it is proper we get top teams to play against in future”, Adepoju urged.
