Taekwondo referee decries Nigeria’s absence at C’Wealth tourney

President of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation Referees Association (NTFRA), Ferguson Oluigbo, on Friday expressed regret that Nigeria did not participate in the just-concluded 5th Commonwealth Taekwondo Championships in India.
Oluigbo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) it was sad that the country had not participated in the championships since inception.He said it was the only Commonwealth country that was absent from this year’s edition.
He said the aim of the annual event was to promote the development of taekwondo and include it in the Commonwealth Games.
``The idea is to improve the standard of taekwondo in the Commonwealth countries and ensure that it is featured as one of the sports at the Commonwealth Games,’’ he said.
The NTFRA president noted that Nigeria’s absence denied the country’s athletes the opportunity of using the latest taekwondo equipment.
Oluigbo said the athletes could only improve through participation in international Championships and the use of modern equipment.
``This will enhance their self confidence,’’ he added.
He listed participation of referees and coaches in seminars, donation of training kits and annual registration rebates as some of the benefits of taking part in the tournament.
He called on the National Sports Commission (NSC) to begin preparations early for the 10th All Africa Games in Mozambique.
