Nigeria’s Flying Eagles will return to the country on March 14 at the end of a month-long overseas training tour preparatory to the African Youth Championship.
The team were originally not billed to return to Nigeria, but with Libya now most likely not to stage the AYC because of the uprising in the North African country, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have had to re-arrange the team’s travel plans.NFF acting general secretary, Musa Amadu, said: “They are expected to fly back to Nigeria on March 14 and we have made arrangement for them to fly to the new tournament venue, whenever that is named by CAF, depending on the new date for the competition”.
South Africa and Algeria are believed to be now vying to host the biennial AYC.
John Obuh’s team played two warm-up matches with their Libyan counterparts, before they embarked on residential training in Turkey.
They will now fly out of Turkey to the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday. They will then play the Egypt U-20 team on Friday, March 11, and on Sunday, March 13, tackle the U-20s of Saudi Arabia, also in Dubai.
The Flying Eagles are drawn against world champions Ghana, Cameroon and The Gambia in Group B of the 2011 African Youth Championship.
The semi-finalists of the AYC will represent Africa at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Colombia from July 29.
