Nigeria’s Super Eagles will now take on Kenya in a friendly on March 29 in Abuja after plans to tackle Zambia on the same day fell through, officials have informed MTNFootball.com.
The Harambee Stars of Kenya are now to slug it out with the Eagles in a FIFA friendly window match two days after the Nigeria’s Africa Nations Cup qualifier against Ethiopia at the same venue.There was a two-hour deliberation Thursday afternoon involving Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president, Aminu Maigari; general secretary Musa Amadu; deputy general secretary (technical), Emmanuel Ikpeme and the chairman of the technical committee of the NFF, Christopher Green. It was there that the choice of Kenya was agreed.
The NFF top officials considered the choice of Kenya as equally good since the Harambee Stars gave Nigeria a scare in Nairobi during the 2010 World Cup qualifier before two quick goals from striker Obafemi Martins in the second half sealed a 3-2 victory for the Super Eagles. It was a result that was enough to fetch Nigeria the World Cup ticket.
NFF spokesman Ademola Olajire had told MTNFootball.com earlier on Thursday that that the earlier scheduled friendly against Zambia was not feasible as a result of the logistical problems.
“I believe the friendly against the Chipolopolo of Zambia won’t hold any more. It is not feasible any more as a result of logistics on the part of the Zambians,” disclosed Olajire.
“They are saying that they do not have a direct flight from Zambia to Nigeria, which means that they would have to go to Johannesburg in South Africa to catch a direct flight to Nigeria on Monday for a match that will be played on Tuesday.”
