President Goodluck Jonathan will today in Abuja host 13 categories of athletes and officials who have in the past two years distinguished themselves at international competitions.
Mr Tony Ohaeri, the Chief Press Secretary to the Sports Minister and Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Prof. Taoheed Adedoja, disclosed this in Abuja.``The presidential reception is for Team Nigeria athletes and officials and it will hold on March 26 at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa with President Jonathan as the Chief Host,’’ he told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Ohaeri said the Nigerian athletes and officials to be received by Jonathan were those involved in various sports and who represented the country at many international events between 2009 and 2010.
``The athletes and officials cut across teams, which represented Nigeria between 2009 and 2010 in various sports, such as football, badminton, athletics, scrabble, wrestling and weightlifting,’’ he said.
Ohaeri listed the teams to include the Nigerian contingent to the 19th Commonwealth Games held in September 2010 in New Delhi, and the First Youth Olympic Games held in Singapore in August, 2010.
``The Golden Eaglets team to the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Nigeria in 2009, the Falconets team to the 2010 FIFA Under-20 Women’s Championship in Germany and the Super Falcons who won the African women Championship in South Africa in 2010 are also to be honoured,’’ he said.
The NSC spokesperson also said the Nigerian teams to the 2010 African Scrabble Championship in Ghana and the 2010 World Junior Athletics Championships in Canada would be honoured.
``The teams to the 2010 All-Africa Senior Badminton Championships in Kenya, the 2010 African Athletics Championships in Kenya and the 2010 African Junior Weightlifting Championship in Egypt will also be there.
``Also to be honoured are the teams to the 2010 World Wrestling Championship in Russia, the 2010 African Senior Wrestling Championship in Egypt and the 2010 African Junior Wrestling Championship in Egypt,’’ he said.
The official said guests invited to the occasion cut across the world of sports, business and politics in Nigeria.
``Guests invited include the Senate president, speaker of House of Representatives, Chief Justice of the Federation, state governors and National Assembly members, past and present sports administrators and various stakeholders.
``Others are various notable sponsors of sports at both the corporate and individual levels, sports stakeholders and many others,’’ he said.
The presidential reception will be the first since t Jonathan assumed office.
