Nigerian-born Innocent Emeghara is one of three new players called up by Swiss coach Ottmar Hitzfeld for next month’s Euro qualifier against England.
Emeghara, 22, was listed along with fellow forward Admir Mehmedi, 20, and 19-year old midfielder Granit XhakaThe invitation comes as the perfect birthday present for the striker, arriving as it did on the day he turns 22.
Hitzfeld expects the striker’s speed to be crucial against England. “Emeghara’s speed us impressive, and that may be important against England.”
Even if he fails to tack up any minutes against England in London, it will be a terrific rise for the youngster, who was a reserve at FC Zurich barely two years ago.
A move to FC Winterthur boosted his career, as he hit 17 goals for the lower division side, prompting a move to Grasshoppers.
The young forward gained Swiss citizenship last September, and has represented his new country 3 times at Under-21 level, scoring four goals.
