Sambo draws curtain on Emir of Katsina Charity Polo

The international polo fiesta which annually attracts top professional players and teams from USA, Argentina, South Africa, Egypt and host Nigeria, is revered as the biggest charity polo event in the continent.
The 2011 edition has been particularly exciting with the participation of over 20 teams from around the globe, jostling for honours and raising funds to support UNICEF campaign against HIV/AIDS pandemic among Nigerian children.
Access Bank/Emir of Katsina Charity event which galloped off on a blistering note a week ago, is hitting its final bend this weekend with two glittering prizes up for grabs.
Today (Saturday), The Work-to-Ride team from the USA would take on the American University team from Yola in the final of the UNICEF Cup.
Both teams picked their final tickets after their group games, with the Americans who are angling for their four UNICEF Cup title winning all the group games to the final.
The Ahmed Sodangi-led AUN side who lost in the final to the American two years ago, have vowed to redeem their imaged by keeping the title in Nigeria for the first time.
“Work to Ride team may be the favourites going into the final, but this time around, we are determined to give it our best push and ensure victory for Nigeria,” Sodangi vowed.
The Vice President would expected to take the traditional toss in the grand finale on Sunday, where three high-goal teams including the defending champions, Access Bank team are still in the running for the coveted Charity Shield, which remains the event’s biggest prize.
With the elimination of Kano Titans who lost their two opening games against Access Bank and Linetrale Trafigura, the battle is now a three horse race pitting title holders, Access bank, last year’s runners-up, Lagos MRS and hopeful Linetrale Trafigura.
Two out of the four main prizes at stake had already been decided with Lagos teams sweeping everything at stake. Lagos Sub Riders defeated Kano D’Afrik to win their glittering Access Bank Cup, while Lagos Tavia Trojan overwhelmed Y Y team 9-51/2 in the medium goal final watched by the Kaduna State Deputy Governor, Ramalan Yero to clinch the highly revered Muhammadu Kabir Usman Cup.

Vice President, Architect Namadi Sambo is expected as the Special Guest of Honour at the ongoing Access Bank Emir of Katsina Charity Polo Tournament, which climax with fanfare tomorrow.
