7th NAF Games begins October 29

The 7th edition of the Nigeria Air Force Games is scheduled to hold concurrently between October 29 to November 5 in Calabar, Cross Rivers State and Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Addressing the press yesterday in Abuja, the Chief of Administration in the Nigerian Air Force, Air Vice-Marshal Abdullahi Ibrahim Kure said the games is intended to prepare the Team Nigeria Air Force for next year’s Armed Forces and Security Agencies Games.He said apart from selection of athletes that would represent the Air Force in the forthcoming Armed Forces Games, the competition would ultimately assist in promoting the physical wellbeing of the personnel for enhanced performance in their statutory functions.
“The Air Force Games is also designed to foster cordial relationship between the NAF and the civil populace within the host states bearing in mind the transformation agenda of the federal government”.
AVM Kure disclosed that the games would attract at least 1000 athletes who would compete in 22 medal-scoring sporting events, while scrabble, chess and darts would be conducted as non-scoring events.
He said the medal scoring events would include cross country, shooting, tug of war, athletics, boxing, wrestling, weight lifting, football, badminton, basketball, swimming, golf, handball, squash, table tennis and tennis.
According to him, five Nigerian Air Force commands, namely, NAF Headquarters, Tactical Air Command, Mobility, Logistics and Training Commands would take part in the games which last held in 2005.
AVM Kure further assured that in order to ensure that only personnel of the Air Force compete in the games, a screening committee charged with the responsibility of ascertaining the authenticity of the athletes has been constituted.
“We are not going to have any problem of mercenaries because there would be no room for such. A screening committee has been constituted to ensure that only Nigerian Air Force staff partake in the games”.
He said in as much as there would be no cash prizes for eventual winners, those who excel would take home trophies, medals and certificates of excellence.
