Dala Hard Court Championship to gulp N16.7m

In spite of sponsors not forthcoming with funds, the 25th Dala Hard Court Tennis Championships will serve off on Saturday in Kano, the organisers have said.
Alhaji Bashar Gumel, the Chairman of the Organising Committee, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Kano that so far only N5 million had been received for the championship.He said that an initial budget of N16.7 million had been drawn up to host the championship.
Gumel said that apart from Fidelity Bank Plc that had responded, other sponsors, such as the Central Bank of Nigeria and First Bank Plc., were yet to release funds for the championships.
He said that the two other sponsors had, however, promised to release funds before the tournament starts.
The chairman said that this year’s edition-- tagged the silver jubilee championship-- would have 10 players from some West African countries.
He explained that the Nigeria Tennis Federation had approved the hosting of the championship from Nov. 19 to Nov. 27.
Gumel said that the players would compete in the men’s singles, ladies singles and men’s doubles.
He said that the ladies single winner will go home with N 500,000, while the winner of the men’s category will go home with N1 million.
Gumel added that second place winner of the men’s single will pick up N 500,000 while the runner up in the ladies event will get N250,000.
