Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi is to call up 30 players from the Nigeria Premier League for a local training camp in Abuja next week, officials disclosed.
“A training camp for home-based players will begin next week in Abuja with 30 players,” technical committee chairman of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Chris Green, told MTNFootball.com“We have not been definite about the date because we need funds to do this.”
Kaduna and Makurdi were earlier proposed to stage this training camp.
Keshi’s assistants used the final weeks of the NPL to scout for players for this camp with Warri Wolves star defender Ikechukwu ThankGod one of the players expected to be part of this training camp.
Keshi has insisted on a camp for local players ahead of a 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Rwanda.
‘Big Boss’ used players from the local league as the backbone of the team that qualified little Togo to their first-ever World Cup finals in 2006.
He has maintained that these players will be given a decent chance to fight for places in his team with the Europe-based pros.
Fans and officials alike have questioned the commitment of the country’s foreign-based stars to the national team in recent times.
No dates have yet been fixed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the Rwanda match, but NFF officials informed MTNFootball.com that they fancy a FIFA friendly window for these qualifiers.
