Speaking to our reporter after his election, Gombe decried a situation where the number of Northern players in the various Nigerian national football teams has continue to decline, saying a road map checkmating the trend before 2016 would be worked out by the committee.
Aside the decline in the number of national team players from the North in Nigeria’s various national football teams that worry the forum, Gombe also says it is disturbing that out of over 7000 Nigerian footballers plying their trade outside the country, the North cannot boast of 700 players.
To this end, he said the committee has been mandated to ensure that the era of Daniel Amokachi, Tijani Babangida and Garba Lawal among others returns.
“The main thing is for us to ensure by 2016, the North has at least 50 players playing in major leagues in the world, and to bridge the wide gap of national team players from the North and South.
“Because as you all know, after the generation of Daniel Amokachie, Tijani Babangida and Garba Lawal, the North no longer produce up to two players at a time in the national team. As at today, we only have Sani Kaita, Terna Suswam and Ahmed Musa from this part of the country in the Nigerian national teams”, Gombe stated.
He said the development is not only disturbing to Northern elders but also worrisome considering the number of talented players from the region.

Sports critic and former Gombe State Football Association Chairman, Alhaji Shaibu Gara Gombe has been elected the chairman of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) on the revival of sports in the region.
