“You watched our match against the Super Eagles in Abuja last Wednesday and it was a good game, but we lost simply because we were playing for the first time as a team, but I want to assure you that we are going to take the league by storm.
“Our target is to win silverware this season, particularly to pick a continental ticket, and we are going to show that tomorrow in our opening league match against Gombe United. We are going for the maximum points tomorrow”, Iorfa who played for BCC, Abiola Babes and Ranchers Bees in the Nigerian league stated.
On the other hand, Gombe United FC Chairman, Malam Auwal Umar, has called on the Premier League Board to suspend the opening of the soccer season scheduled for today by at least a week, to monitor the situation on the current reactions to the removal of fuel subsidy.
Umar, who made the appeal in an interview with newsmen in Gombe on Thursday, said the proposed labour strike might keep away players and match officials from the venues.
“It is better for the league to start late and do well than start early and fail after their matches and holding the match this time is not good for their security”.
He said that the proposed date for the take-off of the league was too early, adding that the break should have been allowed more time to allow players to rest and recover fully from the previous season.
Umar expressed support for the harmonisation of the league but added that it was not good at the expense of the players.
He said Gombe United FC had signed players from the domestic professional league and local boys.
According to him, the club’s screening of players is a continuous process ``because the more the screening, the more they drop some and get the good players’”.
