The founder and chairman of the Abuja Badminton Club, Abubakar Isah has said the ultimate ambition of the club is to identify and nurture talents who would go on to become Olympic champions in future.
Speaking yesterday in Abuja, the ex-badminton player said the decision to float the Abuja badminton club was informed by the dwindling fortunes of the game in the country.He said members of the club felt that the game is not receiving enough attention as it is evident that every attention is being given to football.
Isah said it is worrisome that the country seems to be carrying all its eggs in one basket even as the youths are talented in different games.
He said going by the response from the kids that are currently receiving tutorials under the national badminton coach, Mohammed Bako of the FCT sports council, sooner than later, the club would produce national champions.
The chairman in addition expressed hope that very soon the elite members of the Abuja badminton club would emerge African Champions.
His words: “The essence of setting up the Abuja Badminton Club is to catch them young and teach them the rudiments of the game so that in the near future they would become champions.
“It is always important to start early and this is what we are doing. Everybody seems to be concentrating on football but we cannot carry all our eggs in one basket. We hope to raise champions in our club. You need to watch the kids play. We started from nowhere but we are somewhere now”.
Isah also expressed hope that when the club is able to attract corporate sponsors, it would go a step further by organizing clinics for the kids and also sponsor them to attend international competitions.
“We are just starting but it is our sincere hope that we would be able to attract corporate sponsors. If this happens, we would go a step further by sponsoring the kids to attend international competitions. International exposure will no doubt make them better players”
Meanwhile, the club has concluded plans to organize the 2012 FCT Close Badminton Championship.
The Technical Director of the club, Coach Bako Mohammed said the championship which is exclusive to badminton players in the FCT would begin from July 12 to 14 at the Mambila Barracks in Abuja.
