Two former winners of the Federation Cup, Enyimba FC of Aba and Lobi Stars of Makurdi as well as Warri Wolves were yesterday drawn in Group A of this year’s Federation Cup round of 16. Making up the Bauchi based group which has since been tagged group of death is non-league side Samba FC of Enugu.
Teslim Balogun Stadium Lagos is going to host NPL title contenders Kano Pillars FC, newly promoted El-Kanemi Warriors, National League side, Crown FC Ogbomosho and Kwara United of Ilorin.Group C based in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital is where NPL leaders Rangers international of Enugu, Sharks of Port-Harcourt, and this year’s giant killers Prime FC and Dynamite Force FC of Benin will slug it out for the available quarter final tickets.
Defending Champions, Heartland FC appear to be drawn in a relatively easy group with Gombe United FC, newly promoted Nasarawa United FC and National League side Plateau United based in Port-Harcourt.
NFF’s Director of Competition, Dr. Mohamed Sanusi said the group matches would commence on July 16 and end on July 20 across the four centres.
He said at the end of the group matches the two top clubs would progress while the remaining two would exit the competition just as he explained that winners of each of the groups would remain at the group venues for the quarter final matches.
Sanusi therefore explained that winner of group A will stay in Lagos to entertain the runners up in Group C, and the winner of Group B will welcome the runner up in Group D, the winner of Group C would entertain the runner up in Group A in Lokoja while the winner of Group D will remain in Port-Harcourt to play runner up in Group B2.
The U.J Esuene stadium Calabar and Ilorin Township stadium would host the two semi-final matches with the grand finale to be staged at the Teslim Balogun stadium Lagos.
