Title chasers Enyimba and Kano Pillars have to win to close in on leaders Rangers with four rounds of matches to go in this season’s NPL.
Pillars are three points behind the leaders, while Enyimba are a hefty six points adrift.Enyimba, whose coach Austin Eguavoen quit Thursday and the team placed on half pay, face a tougher test at Akwa United this weekend.
The six-time champions are still smarting from shock elimination from the Federation Cup by lower league side Prime FC of Oshogbo and so now wish to direct all their energies to reclaiming their lost crown.
Enyimba forward Chimezie Amanfor told MTNFootball.com that his team are fired up to beat Akwa United in Uyo in this Week 35 game to make up for their shock cup exit.
“Our lost to Prime FC in Federation Cup was the worst and most painful experience of my career, my entire teammates are still in shock, but we have put that behind us as well have to put ourselves together to battle for the league title,” said Amanfor.
“We need to redeem ourselves, so the game against Akwa United provide that chance for us to do so. We are going there as wounded lions to fight for victory.”
In the reverse fixture, Akwa United forced Enyimba to a 1-1 draw in Aba.
Fellow title chasers Pillars are also very clear they need a big win at home against defending champions Dolphin on Sunday.
Coach Baba Ganaru told MTNFootball.com that they aim to beat Dolphin well so as to topple Rangers from the top of the table.
“We are ready to beat Dolphin so as to regain the leadership of the league. We know we have to beat them well to achieve this. I don’t see Dolphin stopping us on Sunday,” Ganaru declared.
In April, Dolphin won the first clash in Port Harcourt by the odd goal.
