London Olympic: Gaiya wants Ekeji sacked

Following the dismal outing of Nigeria at the just concluded 2012 London Olympic, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on sports, Honourable Godfrey Ali Gaiya has called for the immediate sack of the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Dr. Patrick Ekeji.
Addressing the press yesterday in Abuja, Gaiya said the re-organization of the sector as ordered by President Goodluck Jonathan should begin with a total cleansing of the Sports Commission which has failed in its responsibilities.He expressed disappointment that the President did not order for the immediate removal of the Director General and his management staff.
Hon. Gaiya therefore said instead of waiting for him to be sacked, the DG and his management staff should toe the path of honour by stepping down from their positions.
He expressed shock that in as much as the failure has brought Nigerians serious embarrassment, the Commission instead of tendering unreserved apology to Nigerians is busy trying to justify failure.
His words: “Nigeria has all the potentials so to come back empty handed is not acceptable. Nigeria should move past the level of mere participation. Now that we have come back empty handed, the first thing they should have done is to apologize to Nigerians. It is wrong to say it is a blessing in disguise. There is no blessing in failure. If you fail, you fail.
“Somebody should be held responsible. I don’t believe in this no blame game. If we have not been able to get anything and the same set of individuals have been there for too long, re-organization should mean weeding the commission of such individuals.
Gaiya went further to suggest four year tenure for the position of the Director-General of the NSC saying renewal of the appointment should be based on performance at the Olympics.
“I have always said whoever is appointed the Director-General of NSC, should have a four year tenure. And they should be assessed by the outcome of the Olympic. If they do well, their tenure could be renewed.
“If I give you an assignment, I expect you to deliver but if you fail, you go. In other climes, you don’t wait to come back and be asked to go. In fact you tender your letter of resignation that you have failed. But here people stay and try to justify failure. They even try to heap blame on other people”.
