World scrabble champion to compete in Akpabio Classics

World Scrabble Champion, Nigel Richard, is expected to compete in this year’s Governor Godswill Akpabio Scrabble Classics slated for 27th to 30th September at Le.Meridien Hotel and Golf Resort, Uyo Akwa Ibom state.
The state chairman of the Scrabble Association, Umoh Bassey, revealed in Uyo that other top rated players from Australia, Asia and Africa including World Scrabble President Sam Timer are also expected grace the tournament.The competition he said would be in four categories including the Masters category which would attract a prize money of $15,000 for the winner while about $100,000 would be carted away by winner in all the other categories.
Umoh said plans are under way to introduce the game to students across the state.
According to him 10 schools from each of the three senatorial districts in the state have already been selected and would be provided with training materials.
“You know scrabble is an intellectual game and so we are starting with 30 schools from across the state. Scrabble clubs will be established in the schools while training and facilities will be provided for the students in such schools.
“This is just for the start because we hope to spread the programme to other schools as time goes on,” he said
He said that the association is also collaborating with local government councils in setting up local scrabble associations to make the game popular in all parts of the state.
Umoh tasked sports administrators in the country to ensure that school sports is revived in order to halt the nation’s dwindling fortunes in sports
