The Chief Security Officer of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Gideon Akinsola, yesterday warned unscrupulous elements to stay “miles away” from the U.J Esuene Stadium in Calabar.
The Eagles are scheduled to take on the Lone Star of Liberia today at the stadium in a make-or-break qualifying encounter of the 2013 Africa Nations Cup to be hosted by South Africa.Akinsola, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), gave the warning in a telephone interview yesterday in Abuja.
He said the Inspector General (IG) of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, had ordered that the match venue be adequately secured to forestall any untoward incident.
“The IG has given a directive, and we are here to ensure that the security of the match is guaranteed; we have devised means to prevent any attack and tackle emergency situations,” Akinsola said.
He said that armed security men, including anti bomb squad had been deployed in and around the stadium, as there was every possibility of an attack, going by the security situation in the country.
The chief security officer also revealed that a lot of observations had been made concerning the match and that they were responding to it.
“We don’t have to wait until something happens. We anticipate trouble before it happens, so, we must put everything in place to forestall any negative occurrence.
“First, no drinks of any kind will be allowed into the stands, whether bottled or canned.
“We have appropriate areas where you can buy your drinks in disposable cups if you want to drink,” he said.
Akinsola said that security personnel would ensure that only genuine football fans were allowed into the stadium to watch the match. (NAN)
