No fewer than 188 kids will compete at the 2nd edition of Gymnastics International Junior Level Championship to be staged at the French International School, Abuja on December 8, 2012.
The organiser, Tony Asuquo who made this known to Trustsports at the Abuja National Stadium said the event will be for kids between 3 and 10 yrs.The championship is to be sponsored by Tony International Gymnastic Club in collaboration with French International school, Abuja.
The former International said the competition was to primarily help identify talents that could be groomed to represent the country in International championships in the coming years.
“I will like to see my gymnasts do the level four perfectly at the end of the championship.”
He said good gymnasts will also be identified and trained ahead of next year’s edition which will be in the level five and six categories.
“The competition is aimed at educating Nigerians that before success can be achieved in the sport, there must be a long time plan”, he added.
Speaking on the level system he introduced, Asuquo explained that: “It’s a level system just like the primary school where you have to go from primary 1,2,3...before you move to the secondary school. The same goes in the global world.
“Now we have to start fixing the level system so that as soon as the gymnast get to level 14, he knows that he’s ready to represent the country at the olympics.
“But right now, I’m taking them from level one to four. It was level one to three last year but we have gotten to level four this year. That is how we will keep on moving as more equipment comes in for us.”
