Yuguda: Asset or baggage to the Jonathan campaign?

The recent announcement making the present Governor of Bauchi State, Isa Yuguda, the Campaign Coordinator of President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign for the 2011 presidential polls indeed came to me as a shock. In fact, I had to re-read the story in the papers before it dawned upon me that this is in fact the true position of things.
As a concerned citizen of Bauchi State who has watched closely developments in the state, one wonders what yardstick was used to select Governor Yuguda, who has turned out to be a disappointment to the state, to carry such huge responsibilities.The North East has better politicians who are held in high esteem and who have the clout and respect to ensure the success of the Goodluck Jonathan presidential campaign. Yuguda has become more of a baggage to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bauchi State whose members have continued to complain so seriously that one wonders what he has to offer to the President’s campaign. Is he not more of a baggage and liability than an asset?
It is not too late to look more inwards and pick someone else from the North East zone who will deliver instead of taking such a huge risk on a person who cannot be trusted as he fights to remain in office by all means, even to the extent of changing loyalty within the twinkle of an eye from that of his late father in-law, President Umaru Musa Yar’adua to that of President Goodluck Jonathan. Was it not the same person that was a member of the cabal that insisted on forcing the late President to remain in office despite his failing health?
People who have no qualms about changing allegiance just to achieve their personal ambitions should be touched with a long pole. Can they be really trusted? Politics is all about people, power and trust. So I wonder who will trust such a man who changes allegiance like he changes shirts. People are tired of politicians who come to them using flowery language only for them to forget them immediately after achieving their purpose. The question that has refused to go in my head since the announcement of Yuguda as campaign coordinator for the North East is what were those who penciled his name thinking?
As it is said that charity begins at home, the Governor has been running the affairs of the PDP in Bauchi State as a personal affair to the extent that he went ahead to conduct primaries and congresses at ward level without due regard to the directive of the party at the national level and without consulting with stakeholders of the party in the state.
If the Bauchi state governor carries on like this, the party will definitely lose its members. Important members that he is supposed to depend on as he seeks not only his re-election but that of President Jonathan, although in this instance membership must spread to all states in the North East zone.
Try as much as he could, Yuguda thought he could fool all the people of Bauchi State with his campaign promises that have failed woefully. The people now know better. All over the streets, the people continue to cry out for a leader that would deliver the dividend of democracy. A leader that would change their lives for the better and move the state forward and not one who is fond of taking too much and making little progress. The latest comment in town is that the immediate past Governor of Bauchi State, Adamu Muazu, is a million times better than the present governor. Muazu made a remarkable difference because he ensured that the state was developed to what it is supposed to be. During his tenure, Bauchi changed from being a rural state to an urban state.
Why the choice of Governor Yuguda as a campaign coordinator? What about allegations of corruption against him that are before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC)? Are all these not clear pointers to the fact that selecting Yuguda out as President Jonathan’s campaign coordinator for the North East would translate to bringing the presidential campaign to disrepute as people would see him as a burden and not a blessing? It is worrying that cholera has continued to take the lives of Bauchi indigenes just because the present administration has not deemed it fit to provide basic amenities that include provision of potable water to the people it has sworn to take care of.
I wonder what value Yuguda has to add to the President’s campaign when in fact he has questions that border on integrity and trust to answer and I very much doubt if people would want to be associated in any way with a person who would use any means possible to add another four years in the Bauchi State Government House?
I would end this piece with a word of advice to Mr. President: It is not late to look out for a person of proven integrity and reliable loyalty to head his campaign so that his ambition to continue in power come 2011 will not be in jeopardy.
