Looking down the anals of history, heroes are mostly victors due to their excellent achievement in a particular aspect of life’s endeavor; they hardly combine characteristics of godliness alongside with it. But in the case of Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, the executive governor of Kogi State, he is a hero in all ramifications. He has broken record from business down to politics. But despite his heroic achievement, he remains godly. This quality he manifested through his humility, hard work, honesty, due consideration for others and his simplistic form of appearance.
As a man of his words he has taken a bold step towards the implementation of what he promised during his first tenure in office in his usual characteristic manner of simplicity and forthrightness.
This is shown through the declaration he made in his interview with the Sun newspaper of November12, 2008, where he stated that, “I am of the opinion that our people need enlightenment on how things should go round if we want peace. I believe we should allow it (power) to rotate, I see it that way, and this is the best way it should be.” He went further to say, “I disagree with the notion that it’s only Kogi east that the governor can come from.”
In order to practicalise this, he allowed the chairmanship of Kogi State PDP chapter to move out of Kogi east senatorial district for the first time in the history of the party by giving his support to Mr. Hassan salawu from Kogi west.
This is a manifestation of his due consideration for others and his lack of greed. Today politics in Nigeria is characterized by domination, survival of the fittest, marginalization and all sorts of dubious acts and inhuman attitudes so there’s no doubt that if any popular and powerful politicians like Alh. Ibrahim Idris is able to free himself from such oppressive tendencies he has recorded a huge feat and has shown his willingness in working for humanity. This has also shown that his primary aim of looking for power is to serve the people, uplift and integrate them. His zeal for justice & equity is also shown through the developmental projects he embarked on so far as they are evenly distributed across the state, with the exception of the state capital where he located the state ultra modern market which is justifiable. The grave lopsidedness that characterizes the state civil service and other areas has been there before his assumption of power. We are only appealing for a redress to add to his credit.
The political mindset of the Ibrahim Idris is one that seeks to define politics as a clean game which requires wisdom and prayers as instrument for power struggle and reject violence and enmity, a politics whose final objective is genuine political success for human development and progress. This would have been the best political school of thought in the history of democracy if most politicians are ready to adapt to it. Politics would have been a peaceful exercise that brings about peace and development. So Governor Idris has emerged as a role model for the politicians.
We shall forever remember his Excellency for his determination to bring an end to the crises that has ruined our fatherland and for his effort to restore peace and order in the state. Having said thus we would like to implore the governor to take more serious measures that would relieve the pains of injured ones in various conflicts in the state; there are hundreds of displaced families either because their homes were been burnt down or destroyed beyond repair and children that lost their parents in the course of the crises. Unfortunately, most of these people are innocent. Our schools and colleges also need more qualified teachers, facilities and proper supervision for students to recover all they lost during the crises. We understand that this job takes astute leadership to be accomplished, a leadership that shares the pain and grief of the people and that puts itself in the shoes of others. But we have the firm belief that with commitment and the right kind of political leadership we shall be able to surmount the challenges on our path and build the kind of nation our children would be proud to identify with.
