I am not a partisan politician. And I am not a card-carrying member of any of the political parties in Nigeria. However, I make this write-up as a Nigerian, with my right to freedom of speech.
I vehemently oppose the idea of our beloved President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan wishing to stand to be elected come 2011, on moral grounds and in the overall interest of Nigerians because it is not yet the turn of the zone he comes from based on the rotation arrangement or agreement of the PDP. The PDP leaders came together and confirmed that zoning/rotation is real and cannot be discarded for now. By this understanding, it is very clear that when the PDP now says ‘however’ or ‘but’ President Goodluck under the constitution is free to vie at party primaries, this is just a mere polite corner-corner way of telling Jonathan that look, it is not yet the turn of your zone even though you happen to be there via the death of President Umaru Musa Yar’adua.
This brings me to why I regard President Goodluck Jonathan as a mere political student who is undergoing a Diploma Certificate course in what I refer to as practical studies in Nigeria’s political trends. As has been mentioned in an interview with Professor Iyorchia Ayu: “And as of today, the zoning arrangement of the party favours the northern part of the country . Because if you say it’s a joint ticket with the late Umaru Yar’adua, you will be defeating your argument on zoning. Umaru came from Katsina State in the northern part of the country and he cannot be replaced in the next election by Dr. Jonathan from Bayelsa State that is not from the north.”
Professor Iyorchia Ayu further said: “It is in line with the arrangement that when Prince Ogbulafor was removed from being chairman of the party, they didn’t ask Dr. Bello Haliru who is from Kebbi State to replace him as national chairman. They got a Dr. Nwodo from Enugu State to replace him as the chairman of the party.”
Professor Iyorchia Ayu added: “Nigerians have lingering feelings that if he (Jonathan) is close to Obasanjo he may be corrupted by Obasanjo’s unhealthy ways. If Jonathan announces tomorrow that he will be a neutral umpire…I think he will be the greatest president Nigeria has ever produced. And the easiest way for him to also discredit himself in the eyes of Nigerians is to emerge as someone who violates agreements.”
Jonathan should remember that Obasanjo was a two terms duly elected president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, yet when he wanted an illegal third-term he failed to secure it. Jonathan should ask himself this question: Will he become president after he has been honestly told that even though President Umaru Yar’adua died, it is not yet the turn of his zone to vie for the presidency due to the zoning/rotational agreement which has not been cancelled and which is recently been upheld by the PDP?
Jonathan seem to have forgotten how today, a well respected and highly appreciated Nelson Mandela has succeeded in becoming a world respected leader. Mandela has all the good leadership qualities to have enabled him to continue in office as South Africa’s president but he wisely left the stage when the ovation was still loudest for him.
I also remember very well when Professor Ayu twice resigned his appointment as minister based on good principles/good leadership qualities. He never considered being a minister to be like Baba Iyabo’s slogan of do-or-die. In other words, he never regarded being a minister to be what he cannot stay alive without. Ayu also stepped down as Senate President based on truth and principles.

May the Almighty God continue to bless those who formed a gathering known as G15 and reminded all Nigerians that there was a zoning agreement which cannot be allowed to be unjustly discarded for the selfish desire of others who may not be reasoning beyond their nostrils.
