Adamu Ciroma: The last man standing?

They love to hate him. Some of them despise him while others loathe him with a passion. They see him as a noisy old man that has been fanning the embers of their kind of ‘’money-for-hand-back-for-ground” unity of the country. He is a kill joy who must be harangued and assailed from all directions by all manner of political jobbers and their sundry collaborators who have lately found relevance in the gimmickry Jonathan-for-president mantra which every hawk is today feasting on sumptuously with no care in the world.
What all of them have in common, regardless of who they are or where they come from is that they are political jobbers who have been notorious all their lives for providing political consultancy services to the highest bidder; that their action is dishonourable and is capable of throwing the country into chaos of unimaginable proportion is immaterial to them. The end, to them justifies the means. The Jonathan-for-president drum-beaters that are today falling over themselves to steal the show of this macabre dance are indeed all over the landscape spewing garbage upon garbage making very incoherent and disjointed pronouncements, bordering mostly on war mongering and character assassination and threatening the peace of the country and generally trying to blackmail the rest of us into towing their odious and unpatriotic lines.Some of them, perhaps for want of tangible things to say, have gone as far as libelling Adamu Ciroma as a regional champion who, with elements of his ilk cocooned themselves in their regional garb any time their interests are threatened. They said he has metamorphosed into an irredentist. All the abuse they heaped on him are as a result of his insistence that there was a subsisting agreement to share power between the north and the south and that for now, the south has had its own eight years and that it is now time for the north to complete the last four of its eight year term. No one, not even Jonathan himself has successfully challenged the dictum of Ciroma’s standpoint. When Ciroma argued that Jonathan was at the meeting where the zoning policy was agreed upon and that he too, like Obasanjo and the others have appended their signature to it, they went blank, murmuring balderdash and nonsense.
It would amount to standing truth on its head for a man of Ciroma’s towering and unquestionable nationalistic credentials to be accused of playing regional politics when it has been proved beyond all doubts that Jonathan has, since chancing on power elevated ethnic and regional preferences above any other consideration. As soon as he took over, one of the first thing he did was to compromise the River Niger dredging project in the name of a multi billion naira land reclamation project in the Niger Delta. He soon superintended several policy summersaults which resulted in an unprecedented reduction in electricity supply, suspension of the Abuja-Kano rail project as well as other regionally biased policies which proved the man’s pettiness. Not long ago also, Jonathan allocated 19 oil wells to his home state of Bayelsa and soon after, he broached the idea to employ the criminals in the Niger Delta as coast guards to provide security for oil installations.
He followed that up with other anti-north policies until the Niger Delta terrorists bombed Abuja which was appropriately and promptly claimed by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND). The ethnic bias of the president reared its head almost immediately and the cross fire between the chief spokesperson of MEND as Jonathan was aptly referred to and the rest of the country is now history. What was not lost on the country was that Jonathan is MENDaciously an ethnic president who cannot rise beyond cleavages to reach out to the rest of the country. No one outside the Niger Delta region is oblivious of Jonathan’s crave to play the regional card. Forget the assertions of the motley of Jonathan’s apologists traversing the landscape campaigning for him. We know for sure that all of them are doing so for the lucre and a chance to either become relevant for those of them that have long been consigned to penury or continued relevance for those of them that have been elevated as soon as Yar adua passed on. You can count them.
Ironically, this is the set of people that are today up in arms against Adamu Ciroma. His offence is that he is insisting that leaders must be credible and honourable to respect pacts they freely entered into even if it means a Jonathan must give way. Those who see Ciroma as a noisy oldman are themselves a set of dishonourable men and women who cannot be trusted to provide the kind of leadership required to take Nigeria to the next level. Jonathan and his crowd, whoever they may be have lost the moral ground to expect the support of Nigerians in their self centred voyage.
We salute the courage and presence of mind of Adamu Ciroma and the other honourable men who are at the receiving end of the hate campaign billowing through the political horizon. It has always been like that for people of substance to face trials along the path of rectitude. But at the end, no ounce of injustice has ever prevailed. This cup too, will pass in the fullness of time.
