By its nature and composition, the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) is supposed to be the last hope of the common man. It is by no means a sanctuary for political fugitives and rogues to gate crash into for the sole self-centered agenda of actualising a selfish political agenda and rebuilding their shattered political career; neither is the party for moneybags to infiltrate, flaunt their ill gotten wealth, push original members out and take over leadership of the party for no other justifiable objective other than to hoodwink the people into getting their ilk into political offices.
That was the exact situation in the state chapter of the CPC in Kebbi state, a party that was well accepted and populated by the downtrodden masses of Kebbi who have, since 1999 been at the receiving end of executive rascality and irresponsibility. Just when it was time for those that have laboured and suffered for the party to take it to the zenith of its potentials, a group of notorious carpet crossers and political profiteers headed by former FCT Minister Mohammed Adamu Aliero gate crashed into the party and ever since, the CPC has been in turmoil in the state.Members of the Aliero camp, very few of them but highly rancorous and noisy because of the bags of money to boot, in their weird reckoning, could willy nily send every leader of the party in Kebbi State packing, take control, select delegates at all the party levels, smuggle one of them as gubernatorial candidate, deploy their loot to win election, settle down to governance and soon after retrace their steps back into the PDP just like Aliero did to the ANPP and General Muhammadu Buhari shortly before the 2007 elections. If Aliero could leave the ANPP, the party that got him to power as Governor for eight years, what in the world will stop him and his followers from doing the same to the CPC after just a few months? Once beaten twice shy.
When the ward congress of the CPC took place early December 2010, naturally the Aliero gate crashers were soundly and squarely beaten mainly because those in control of the party right from the beginning had worked hard at it. Surprisingly, the national headquarters of the CPC, acting on a suspicious and one-sided petition and without as much as hearing the other side, unilaterally nullified the ward congress election and also dissolved the state executive committee at all levels in Kebbi State thereby playing into the machination of the Aliero gate crashers and thus ignited a crisis in the state. Ironically, the original ward congress election that was annulled had the tacit approval and endorsement of the security agencies, INEC officials and CPC delegates that were on ground to supervise it. Unfortunately, the CPC has been embroiled in a serious crisis in Kebbi since it became known that the national leadership of CPC has compromised on the side of injustice.
The Board of Trustees meeting of the party appeared to have understood the situation in Kebbi when a few days ago, it announced the dissolution of the Aliero kangaroo executive committee which was selected and imposed on the party right inside the residence of the former minister. It looks like, the CPC has realised the monumental injustice of denying the original party members the fruit of their labour and the consequences of losing the election in the state on the altar of the mindless ambition of people who have proved to be shameless and spineless and who lack an iota of integrity in them. Of course they have money, the source of which is not lost on anybody; but having money cannot be a license to gate crash into a party like the CPC, harass people out of the house they have built and take over the structure just like that. If the CPC sanctions this, then people like me will give up on democracy.
Adamu Aliero and his foot soldiers have cocooned themselves in a mansion in Birnin Kebbi, parading themselves as leaders of the party in the state, paying courtesy visits in fragrant violation of the orders of the party and trying to turn it into a lawless congregation of lawless people. If you know what has become of the PDP and its ‘’do-or-die’’ and ‘’might is right’’ politics, then you get the picture of what I mean. It is classical political brigandage.
What is surprising about the Kebbi issue is that a party with General Buhari as leader will have the time to accommodate people like Adamu Aliero over and above genuine party members who sacrificed their all to build the party from the scratch. Upon all the atrocities and demeaning symbolisation of ANPP and General Buhari perpetrated by Adamu Aliero, that the CPC will still contemplate doing business with such a man is really unthinkable and unbelievable. The implication is that if the Aliero’s injustice is allowed to prevail, then the CPC could as well forget about winning Kebbi State. A vote for Aliero and his cohorts is a vote for the continued slavery of the people of Kebbi State no matter the platform he gets it.
