Just as other sectors in the arts prepare to celebrate Nigeria’s independence, photography will also be making her mark in the festivities. It is in this light that the legendary photographer, Tam Fiofori will be exhibiting in Abuja at the Thought Pyramid Gallery from Thursday, September 23rd to Thursday, October 7th, 2010.
The exhibition in collaboration with Sun Arts: BEP, will jointly celebrate Nigeria’s fifty years of nationhood.According to the organisers, “ ‘1979’ a solo photography exhibition highlights landmark events and distinguished people who have contributed immensely in the areas of political governance and culture to strengthen the Nigerian nation and, sustain the cultural vibrancy that have made Nigeria a recognisable and respected frontline Black nation in the world today.”
To be displayed in the ‘1979’ Exhibition are images of the coronation of the present Oba Erediauwa of the Benin Kingdom; a testimony of how ancient traditional governance has survived and complimented modern-day political/democratic governance in Nigeria, the 1979 Presidential elections campaigns during which Nigeria’s founding fathers and frontline politicians - Azikiwe, Awolowo and Shagari patriotically moved Nigeria towards the path of sustainable democracy and, House Warming celebrations that confirm the socio-cultural identity of Nigerians.
It will chronicle Nigeria’s unique historical images of events, people, places and occasions that specifically document giant strides in fifty years of nationhood and nation-building, which are comfortable reminders of progress made and, a source of inspiration for the future.
Appropriately tagged ‘A Peep into History and Culture,’ the ‘1979’ Exhibition connects the threads of history and culture that have shaped the national fabric of Nigeria and established a direction for the way forward towards strengthening Nigeria for another half-century in the international comity.
