Nneka wins ‘Best African Act’ at MOBOs

Nneka, Nigerian singing sensation, picked up the Best African Act award at this year’s Music of Black Origin Awards (MOBO). She beat other acts including fellow Nigerian, rapper El Dee, to win. Her fast rise to the top is against the backdrop of her having hit the top spot in the Shazam UK Pre-release tag chart with her emotive soul drenched single, ‘Heartbeat’.

Born in Nigeria but raised partially in Germany, Nneka’s soulful hip-hop has already won her a large following in Europe and comparisons to Lauryn Hill, seeing her snag a much-coveted opening slot for rocker Lenny Kravitz’s European tour.

Speaking to Trust Entertainment on phone moments before the MOBO ceremonies began, she said she was not expecting to win. “I mean, just being nominated is cool enough. But if I win, then even cooler,” she said.

‘Heartbeat’ is taken from Nneka’s sophomore album, ‘No Longer at Ease,’ named after Chinua Achebe’s novel. The song and video is currently nominated for a Channel O Award.

Also, British bands N-Dubz and JLS triumphed at the glitzy MOBO show in Glasgow on Wednesday, picking up two plaques each. U.S megastar Beyonce scooped two gongs, as well. Other wins include Best R&B by Keri Hilson and Best Reggae by Sean Paul.
