FCT Rocks whose ambition of winning this year’s Royal Hoopers international Classics in Port-Harcourt ended after losing by a single point to the host club in its fourth match of the championship has expressed satisfaction with its performance.
Speaking to Trustsports, coach of the team, Mr. Emmanuel Odah said it was a wonderful experience taking part in the international Classic which attracted basketball clubs from other African countries like Republic of Benin and Ivory Coast.
He said apart from the impressive performances of his players, the experience gained would go a long way in propelling his team to better performances in future.
The former junior national basketball team coach noted that in as much as the classic featured premier league players who are well experienced, his relatively inexperienced boys gave a good account of themselves as they were not intimidated by the big boys.
He said in their opening match against Elpizo Academy of Ivory Coast, FCT Rocks won 51-27, in the second match, his team beat Bayelsa Waves 63-62, lost by 52-53 to Yelwa Hawks before losing 54-55 to the host club Royal Hoopers of Port-Harcourt.
Odah said the slim loss to the host club ended his teams impressive run in the championship but that did not take away the fact that his players gave a good account of themselves.
The coach revealed that most of the big clubs are presently interested in some of his players because of their outstanding performance in the basketball Classics.
“I must commend my players because we had a very short preparation. We trained for only five days but the boys were able to withstand the bigger boys” he said.
He blamed his team’s failure to win the championship on the mass exodus of players which hit his club as a result of lack of sponsorship.
The coach disclosed that most of his players have been poached by some of the leading basketball clubs in the country and even those who returned to play for FCT Rocks in the Royale Hoopers Classics did so because of their respect for him.
“Most of my players had left for other clubs because in FCT, we don’t seem to be able to provide the needs of the players. Considering the fact that the Classics in Port-Harcourt is meant for elite players, I had to beg some of them to come and assist us. So my team was made up of seventy percent elite players and thirty percent national sports festival materials” he explained.
