Unity Bank football team better known as Unity Stars have got their sights on this year’s Central Bank of Nigeria’s Governors Football trophy as they aim to make history by being the first team across the Nigeria to lift the cup since its inception decades ago.
The epic final which is billed for the ultra modern Aper Aku Stadium Makurdi will see the high riding Unity Stars taking on Union Bank who are the winners of the Lagos/Ibadan zone of the championship.Although they can not boast of Union Bank’s experience which spans over many years of active participation in the competition, Unity Stars deeply rooted in the post consolidation era in the banking industry has become a household name in the bankers’ football family.
From the Corporate League in Kaduna which started in 2007 and which Unity Stars won two times and were runners up once, a new generation of football artists was born.
The recently concluded Abuja Bankers’ Soccer Championship, organized by Lisadeen Consult, provided a platform on which Unity Stars asserted their authority in the round leather game by emerging as the overall champions with the highest goal scorer and most valuable player awards.
The challenge for the CBN Governor’s Cup is thus a consolidation game for Unity Stars as the new sensation of Bankers’ football. The final showdown against Union Bank is therefore a contest between old generation (Union Bank) and new generation (Unity Bank).
Stories from the Unity Stars camp at Falalu Bello Academy in Kaduna reveal that all is well. No injury and no psychological problem. The team is united and hungry for glory.
Regarding their chances of winning the Governor’s Cup, Unity Stars players camping in Kaduna said, “We are aware of our history which is identical with the birth of Unity Bank. No one gave us a chance to get this far. But with Management’s support and our collective commitment, we have been able to set a standard that will not be easily smashed in years to come. Our aspiration is to win the Governor’s Cup to show our appreciation to where the Bank is today.”
