3rd Korean Ambassador’s taekwondo tourney underway in Abuja

A total of 70 medals and three trophies would be won at the third edition of the West Africa International Taekwondo Championship which formally gets underway in Abuja today.
Secretary-General of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (TFN), Mrs Chinedu Ezealah, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in an interview on Friday in Abuja.She said the trophies and medals would be won from competition in eight weight categories in both the male and female categories.
“In the Kyorugi event, 64 medals are at stake with eight gold, eight silver and 16 bronze medals in the male category and the same number in the female category.
“In the Poomsae event, six medals would be won, with one gold, one silver and one bronze medal at stake in each of the male and female categories.
“Also, a trophy is at stake for the competition’s best team, while the Most Valuable Player in the male and female categories would win one trophy each,’’ Ezealah said.
NAN reports that the competition which is also known as the Korean Ambassador’s Cup competition is holding at the Velodrome of the Abuja National Stadium.
The competition which is to have participants from Nigeria, Benin Republic, Cameroon, Mali, Niger and Gabon is scheduled for Dec. 2 to Dec. 5, with the opening ceremony slated for Dec. 3.
The TFN Secretary-General listed the eight weight categories of competition at the championship as fin-weight, flyweight, featherweight, bantamweight, lightweight, welterweight, middleweight and heavyweight.
She said the championship’s organisers were expecting a good number of taekwondoists from the participating countries as the competition is an open event.
“We are expecting a lot of participants for the championship, being an open event, and we expect good competition in view of its international nature,’’ Ezealah said.
NAN reports that the championship’s schedule had the registration and accreditation of teams, taekwondoists, coaches and referees on Thursday.
The referees’ training, Head of Delegates’ and technical officials’ meetings, and the taekwondoists’ weigh-in were also held late on Thursday, while preliminary competition was slated to commenced yesterday.
The official opening ceremony is scheduled for today, while the final competitions and closing ceremony are billed for Monday.
The championship which is being sponsored by LG Electronics is jointly organised by both the Korean Cultural Centre of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Nigeria and the TFN.
