The former member of the House of Representatives from Plateau State said most governors have continued to use the clubs as conduit pipes to drain their state resources.
He explained that most of the clubs are entrusted in the hands of people who know next to nothing about football administration adding such appointments are made based on political considerations.
Lumumba noted that when such appointments are made, the clubs suffer a lot because funds released are misappropriated without any reproach from the government because such ‘quack’ football administrators are simply carrying out the agenda of those who appointed them.
The former member of the NPL interim-management committee noted that the moment government allows corporate bodies to take over the ownership of clubs, Nigerian football would witness a serious turn-around.
His words: “I am fully in support of what the Rivers State government is planning to do. It is long overdue. This is one of the things I have canvassed at different fora. I have never shied away from asking government to reduce the funding of clubs.
“Our football will improve only when government allows corporate bodies to own and run clubs as it was in the days of Abiola Babes, Iwuanyanwu Nationale, Udoji United and Jasper. Today all the clubs in the NPL are funded by government.
“The environment is not conducive for private clubs to thrive in Nigeria and nobody cares to ask why some of the privately owned clubs that existed have folded up. I had a club before and I know exactly what I faced”.

The decision by the government of Rivers State to sell its two NPL clubs, Sharks and Dolphins to any interested buyer has been hailed by former NFF presidential aspirant, Hon. Lumumba Dah Adeh who said it is a welcome development. Reacting to the proposed sale of the two clubs, Lumumba who is the proprietor of defunct Jos City Raiders FC said the governor Rotimi Amaeachi’s decision is commendable and should be adopted by other states which are still sponsoring clubs in the NPL.The former member of the House of Representatives from Plateau State said most governors have continued to use the clubs as conduit pipes to drain their state resources.
